Michael Averko

Excerpt:

"Sarah Schafer's article on May 31 expressed fear that the economic crisis may put an end to Russia's souvenir industry, including the production of legendary matryoshkas. One line in the article made me smile:

'A beloved children's toy in the Soviet era, when the state economy provided consumers with few choices, the matryoshka became less popular in Russia after the economy opened up.'

As a child of 'the Soviet era', I remember my toy box filled with toy soldiers, pistols, rifles, and cars of various sizes, colors, and degree of ugliness. But never in my life did I have a matryoshka or see a Russian kid playing with one."

You made me smile Eugene.

As a kid in the early 1970s, I recall my dad saying the same in reply to an English language mass media piece making that same comment as Schafer.

In English language mass media, I haven't seen anything about what has to be the political comedy of the year so far - having to do with Yushchenko warning of a "coup" against him. This coming from someone whose party is said to have a popularity rating of 1% or less.

"It's a mad house! A mad house!" Charlton Heston, as Taylor in The Planet of the Apes (which I just got through watching).

Thanks Mike,

That's what I like about WP: a sense of humor. Even if this humor is unintended as in Sshafer's case.

As for Yushchenko: next time I'm in Russia, I'll look for a matryoshka with his face (and Yulia and Vitja inside)...

Best,
Eugene

You're quite welcome and thank you as well Eugene.

Perhaps there's one of him that's inclusive of what seems to be among his favorite Ukrainian historical figures (Mazepa, Petliura and Bandera).

Salut!

Nice piece Eugene
liked it all and especially this 'matryoshka' example ;)

Thanks for another "WP Digest", Eugene. Don't you think that your are sawing off the branch you are sitting on? Can it be that the drop in their anti-Russian vigor was partly due to your efforts? :)) I reluctantly agree with you on Russian-Georgia trade. Although I am not sure what they still have to sell - the "famous" tea, which you probably also remember well? Or the regurgitate (or shall I say - "barfiate" for clarity?) of the American democracy? Or only a headache for partner's quality control?

Cheers

Eugene Ivanov

Thanks very much Nick!

I already realize from all your guys comments that the old wooden lady has saved my day (and this piece :)

Regards,
Eugene

Igor privet! Nice talking to you again.

As far as WP is concerned, my working hypothesis is that the stock market has hit the bottom before recovering as the July summit in Moscow is approaching :)

As for Georgia, yes, I know everything about quality etc. My ONLY point is that there is no reason to lose Georgia because Medvedev & Putin hate Saakashvili.
